The Laughlin High School Cross-Country teams successfully defended their 2A Regional titles on their home course at Mountain View Park in Laughlin.
For the second straight year, the Cougar boys and girls teams won the Southern Nevada 2A Regional Championships and qualified for State competition to be held next Saturday in Reno.
Laughlin’s Scott Eubanks won individual honors capturing the 2A race in the fastest time of the day of 17:24. Teammate Derek Fajardo captured runner-up honors with a time of 18:49. Earning a medal in the 6th spot was Kyle Winters with a time of 20:40 followed closely by teammates Devin Tilley and Richard Swartz in 8th and 9th places with times of 21:03 and 21:09 respectively. Completing the varsity roster were Julian Estrada (16th) in 22:04 and Steven Koonce (18th) in 22:40.
The Laughlin boys won easily with a team score of 23 points compared to 2nd place Trinity High School finishing with 59 points. The Meadows school finished 3rd with 71 and Indian Springs was 4th with 74 points.
The Laughlin girls were paced by Senior Chynna Yates’ 2nd place finish in 23:54. The Cougar girls then captured the next 4 spots with Alexandra Condray (3rd) in 24:04, Gracie Geremia (4th) in 24:52, Cady Groves (5th) in 25:16, and Brenda Cortez (6th) in 25:58. Christine Acosta (8th) and Alejandra Zuniga (12th) finished in 27:22 and 33:12 respectively.
Because the overall female winner, Wendy Harris (Lund High School), was the only participant from her school, she was removed from the team scoring leaving the Laughlin girls with a perfect score of 15. The Meadows School finished 2nd with a score of 46.
Quotes from Coach Lori Petrik:
“I’m really proud of how all the kids performed today. Scott and Derek have been a dominant force in our conference all year and today was certainly no exception. Even though Scott is a senior, this is only his first year competing in cross-country so I can’t say enough about what he has been able to accomplish this season. The runners from the northern region are always very tough so he’ll have to work much harder next week if he wants to bring home a state championship but he certainly has the talent to do it. The key to our hopes in the team competition lies with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th runners who have really shown improvement over the past few races.”
“Chynna has really stepped up her effort over the past month and is getting back to her all-state form. I like the tight grouping we have with our girls right now. We have competed much better as a team over these past few races and I’m excited to see what they can do at the state championships next week in Reno.”

Quotes for Coach Lori Petrik:
“I thought Scott and Derek ran really well for us out front today. The League Championships consist of the best of 1A, 2A, and 3A schools in southern Nevada. We’ve never had the individual champion at this race before so to take the top 2 spots was very gratifying. These 2 boys have gained this program a great deal of respect this season. Kyle, Richard, and Steven all ran their fastest mile splits of the season today so I thought it was a solid overall effort from our boys team.”
“I was very proud of Alexandra and Cady’s performances today on the girls side as they ran personal bests for this distance. Our girls have finally started to compete well as a team and I think they have the potential to be very competitive in our conference at the regional and state level.”
