Pre-Season LHS Cross Country News

August 7, 2005

The Laughlin High School Cross-Country teams are set to defend their 2A boys and girls regional titles. Practice will begin on Monday, August 15th at 7:00 PM at Mountain View Park in Laughlin. Those wishing to participate must turn in the appropriate paperwork to Athletic Director, Ben Fermon. This paperwork can be obtained at the fall sports meeting to be held at the Laughlin High School Theatre on Tuesday, August 10th at 6:00 PM.
Coach Lori Petrik is optimistic about the Cougars chances of repeating as regional champions particularly with the boys program. “I’ve always offered an optional summer training program for the kids who want to get a head start on the season. This summer I’ve had my highest participation since beginning the program 4 years ago. We had about 8-10 kids who came out fairly consistently with 3 of the boys, Devin Tilley, Julian Estrada, and Shaun Rees who ran over 200 miles during June and July. All 3 of these boys are first year runners so I was very impressed with the commitment that they showed to the program over the summer months.”

“Senior Scott Eubanks is likely to be our top runner as the season opens. This is his first year at this sport but I believe he is going to surprise some people. He’s just a natural talent at distance running and should be able to step in and help fill the void left by the graduation of last year’s Regional Champion, Stephen Hesch.”
“Hopefully, Derek Fajardo will be back to challenge for the number 1 spot. He earned All-State honors in 2004 as a sophomore. Behind Scott and Derek, we’ve been able to develop 4 or 5 other boys this summer who are really going to be solid contributors to the team this fall. These include Devin, Julian, and Shaun along with Richard Swartz and Steven Koonce. Returning runners Kyle Winters, Garrick Swartz, and Josh Fajardo should play a role as well.”
“I really don’t know what to expect on the girls side. We’ve only had 1 girl, freshman Alexandra Condray, who has participated in any summer workouts. This could be a rebuilding year for the girls program. We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of numbers we have once mandatory practice begins on the 15th.”
“I’m just ready for the season to open. Some of these kids have worked so hard the past 2 months. They’ve been a fun group to work with and I’m looking forward to watching them compete.”
